Sound Bowl Trainings

Trainings in Tibetan and crystal sound bowls, tuning forks and the voice, for yoga teachers, therapists and anyone called to offer sound. No musical background required.

The experience

A whole-body listening experience

A sound bath is a profoundly immersive, whole-body listening experience that harnesses the transformative power of sound.

Tibetan and crystal sound bowls, voice, chimes, ocean drum and other sound tools can be woven together to create a journey through tone, resonance, vibration and harmonics — inviting participants from outer sound toward inner listening, deep relaxation, stillness and presence.

Creating a beautiful sound bath goes beyond simply learning how to play an instrument. It is about understanding how sounds relate to one another, how to pair and layer different tones, when to introduce sound and when to allow silence, and how to create and hold the space for an intentional sound journey.

And this is something you can learn to do.

Through these trainings, you’ll learn how to work with Tibetan and crystal sound bowls and complementary sound tools, and how to bring them together to create sound journeys for groups of people.

Beginning with Level 1, you will learn the foundational skills to confidently create, structure and offer a group sound bath of your own.

Tibetan & Crystal Sound Bowl Training

Level 1 • Online Training

Learn to play, pair and layer Tibetan and crystal sound bowls and complementary sound tools, and gain the foundational skills to create and offer your own group sound bath.

No previous experience or musical background is required, and you do not need to own a set of Tibetan or crystal sound bowls to participate. Come with whatever bowl or sound tools you already have — or simply come ready to learn.

From the rich, complex overtones of Tibetan sound bowls to the crystalline resonance of crystal bowls, this training moves beyond simply learning to play an instrument into a deeper exploration of sound, tone, frequency, resonance, vibration, harmonics and the art of listening.

Throughout this live online training, Amanda will demonstrate techniques and guide you as you practise with whatever bowls or sound tools you have available. You will explore the foundations of sound and music, learn how different tones and intervals relate to one another, and discover how to thoughtfully combine and layer bowls, voice and complementary sound tools to create a cohesive sound journey.

We will also explore frequency, resonance, vibration and harmonics, along with the relationship between sound, the subtle body and our experience of listening and receiving sound.

No prerequisites • Open to everyone

No previous experience with sound bowls, music or sound work is required. You do not need to be musical, and you do not need to own a complete set of Tibetan or crystal sound bowls.

If you have one bowl, bring one bowl. If you have several bowls, bring those. If you have chimes, an ocean drum or other sound tools, you are welcome to use those too. Begin with whatever you already have.

If you do not yet own a bowl, or you are considering purchasing your first bowl or expanding your collection, you are welcome to contact Amanda before the training for guidance on where to begin and what might work best for you.

What you’ll learn

  • Striking, rimming and sustaining tone, and developing confidence working with your bowls
  • The fundamentals of sound, frequency, vibration and resonance
  • Basic principles of music and music theory as they relate to working with sound
  • Musical intervals and harmonics — understanding how tones relate to one another and how to pair bowls
  • How to create beautiful sequences and progressions when playing your bowls
  • How to work with Tibetan and crystal sound bowls together, as well as incorporating other complementary sound tools
  • How to work with a seven-bowl crystal sound bowl set, including how to arrange and sequence the bowls
  • How to layer bowls and other sound tools to create a cohesive sound journey
  • How to incorporate voice, mantra and vocal toning into your sound practice if you choose
  • An introduction to the four levels of sound (Nāda Yoga)
  • An introduction to the astral anatomy of the chakras and ways of exploring sound in relationship with the chakras
  • How to create and hold the space for a group sound bath, from welcoming participants and establishing a relaxed environment through the sound journey, integration and closing
  • Ideas for readings, guided relaxation and spoken words that can be incorporated into your sound bath to help create an intentional and deeply relaxing experience
  • How to understand the importance of silence, space and listening as part of the sound journey
  • Sounding Prāṇāyāmas
  • Harmonically rich sound layering
  • Cymatics
  • Water and sound

You don’t have to be musical

One of the most important parts of this Level 1 training is making sound accessible. You do not need to read music or have any previous musical training.

Your comprehensive manual will include a simple framework showing you how to set up and sequence your bowls and what to play next, almost like reading sheet music.

If you have a set of seven crystal sound bowls, you will have a clear guide to help you understand how the bowls can be arranged, paired and played together to create harmonious sequences.

You can then use this framework as your foundation while gradually developing your own listening skills, intuition and individual style.

After completing Level 1

By the end of the training, you will have a foundational understanding of how to work with Tibetan and/or crystal sound bowls and complementary sound tools, how to pair and layer sound, and how to structure a sound journey from beginning to end.

You will leave with a practical framework that you can continue to practise and develop, giving you the foundational skills and confidence to begin offering group sound baths.

Included in your training

  • Comprehensive Level 1 Training Manual
  • Certificate of Completion

Most importantly, this will be a fun, welcoming and experiential online training where you can explore sound without feeling that you need to be a musician or own an expensive collection of instruments.

Come with whatever bowl or sound tools you already have — or simply come ready to learn.

Listen. Play. Explore. Create.

Begin discovering your own relationship with sound, resonance and the art of creating a beautiful sound journey.

Nāda Yoga, Voice, Mantra & Vocal Toning

Yoga Beyond Āsana: bringing the subtle practices of yoga into the classes you already teach, including an introduction to Tibetan & crystal sound bowls.

Subtle Anatomy • Chakras • Nāḍīs • Prāṇāyāma • Five Vāyus • Mudrā • Mantra • Nāda Yoga • Sound Bowls • Affirmations • Intention • Class Themes

How do we bring more of the subtle aspects of yoga into the āsana classes we already teach? As yoga teachers, much of our class time is naturally devoted to the physical practice of āsana: teaching alignment, position and action in the poses, movement, breath, modifications and safe transitions. But yoga is so much more than āsana.

How can we weave prāṇāyāma, subtle anatomy, mudrā, mantra, sound, intention, pratyāhāra, dhāraṇā and the Five Vāyus into the classes we already teach, in ways that feel natural, accessible and meaningful?

Yoga Beyond Āsana is a 7.5-hour experiential continuing education course presented over three consecutive Wednesdays, with one 2.5-hour session each week. The course is taught live online, giving participants the opportunity to learn, experience the practices, ask questions and explore ways of integrating them into their own teaching. It is designed for yoga teachers who want to expand their teaching toolbox and bring more of the richness of yoga's Eight-Limbed Path into the regular āsana classes they already teach.

Subtle & astral anatomy

  • Prāṇa, vital life-force energy
  • Iḍā, Piṅgalā and Suṣumṇā nāḍīs, the principal energetic pathways
  • The seven principal chakras and their bīja mantras
  • The Five Prāṇa Vāyus: Prāṇa, Apāna, Samāna, Udāna and Vyāna

Prāṇāyāma, the breath as a bridge

One of the most accessible ways to move beyond the purely physical experience of yoga. We experience selected prāṇāyāma practices and explore how they fit naturally into a regular class.

Mudrā • Mantra • Sound • Affirmation • Intention

A hand mudrā while students are centering. A conscious intention or saṅkalpa. An affirmation that supports the theme of the class. Chanting AUM, a bīja mantra, the voice, or inviting students to experience vibration followed by silence. We touch on Nāda Yoga, the yoga of sound, as a pathway for drawing awareness inward.

Introduction to Tibetan & crystal sound bowls

As part of our exploration of sound, participants receive an introduction to Tibetan and crystal sound bowls, tuning forks and other sound tools, with practical ideas for bringing sound into a yoga class. You do not need to own a sound bowl or tuning forks to participate.

Course goals

By the end of this 7.5-hour course, participants will be able to:

  • Explore the traditional yogic understanding of prāṇa and the subtle body, and learn practical ways to introduce these concepts within an āsana class.
  • Identify Iḍā, Piṅgalā and Suṣumṇā nāḍīs and explore ways to weave subtle-body awareness into yoga teaching.
  • Explore the seven principal chakras, their traditional qualities and their associated bīja mantras.
  • Understand the locations, directions, qualities and functions of the Five Prāṇa Vāyus and how awareness of the Vāyus can be incorporated into practice and teaching.
  • Experience selected prāṇāyāma practices and consider how they fit into centering, āsana, preparation for Śavāsana and the transition toward deeper inner awareness.
  • Explore hand mudrās, mantra, AUM, bīja sounds, affirmations, visualization and intention, with practical ideas for class themes and regular classes.
  • Experience Nāda Yoga, sound and inner listening, including an introduction to Tibetan and crystal sound bowls, tuning forks and other sound tools.
  • Explore pratyāhāra and dhāraṇā through simple experiential practices and learn ways to introduce these subtler limbs of yoga to students.
  • Develop practical ways to weave these teachings into centering, class themes, āsana, prāṇāyāma and Śavāsana without turning a regular class into a philosophy lecture.
